5 of the Best Places in London to Embrace Wimbledon
Friday 17 June 2016
It’s time to reach to that top drinks shelf, dust off the Pimms, stock up on strawberries & cream, and get that champagne in the cool box, all in preparation for Wimbledon 2016. Sadly, not all of us are related to Andy Murray when it comes to securing tickets, so we’ve lined up the next best places to embrace Wimbledon. Whether you’re a huge tennis fan, or just find yourself getting swept up in the Wimbledon spirit, here are some of the best spots In London to catch the action.
1. Wimbledon Guild Village Fair
Why not get into the Wimbledon spirit early, by supporting their village fair on the 18th June? Highlights will include a petting zoo from Deen City Farm, jousting knights, and a chance to get up close to various birds of prey from the Hawking Centre. There will also be live music on stage, a chill-out jazz tent, and a Farmers’ Market featuring hand-selected artisan meats and cheeses. Money raised on the day will go towards helping the charity continue its work supporting the local community.
Nearest Tube: Wimbledon
2. Strawberries and Screen – Granary Square, King’s Cross
The screens are back in Granary Square with 50 deck chairs available for early birds to kick back in. If you've not planned a picnic, newly opened bar The Lighterman will be serving up tennis themed food, plus delectable street grub will be available at Kerb (lunchtimes Wed-Fri).
Nearest Tube: King’s Cross
3. Nosh @ The Place – Summer Pop Up
Summer Pop Up is back by popular demand, supported by the Alexandra Pub. During the day relax in our pop-up Wimbledon Garden. From 5pm enjoy a Wimbledon Brewery Beer or Pimms Summer Cocktail from the pop-up bar. Showcasing some of Wimbledon’s most exciting street food eateries and talented musicians, soak up the tennis atmosphere from 27th June – 10th July. St Mark’s Place is nestled between Wimbledon Library and the Alexandra Pub, off Wimbledon Hill Rd.
Nearest Tube: Wimbledon
4. Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum
Immerse yourself in the game’s epic history by visiting the Wimbledon Lawn Museum. Not only is there a 3D cinema explaining the science of the game, but a holographic ‘ghost’ of former tennis world champion John McEnroe roaming the dressing room (even though he’s still very much alive and volleying). Interviews with players are broadcast on TV screens and an interactive area allows visitors to handle racquets, feel the weight of a trophy and test their reaction skills in simulation games.
Nearest Tube: Southfields
5. Parliament Hill Tennis Courts
Inspired by Federer’s cheeky shots? Dig out those whites and head down to Parliament Hill Tennis Courts for your own Wimbledon championships. With 20 hard courts, for reasonable prices, it’s a great way to let off some steam after work. Book ahead to secure a place in the busy summer months. Or you could just crack open the Pimms instead…
